Quinchamalium chilense es una obra instalativa articulada en un diálogo entre la artista chilena Josefina Guilisasti y loceras de Quinchamalí, representantes de esta antigua tradición alfarera que postula a ser reconocida como Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Josefina Guilisasti y la antropóloga Belén Roca se interiorizaron en la vida cotidiana de las mujeres de la localidad, internándose en la Región del Ñuble para familiarizarse con su historia, sus anhelos, y su ecosistema. Impulsaron a un grupo de mujeres y hombres a integrarse a las labores de taller de dibujo, e incluir como referente de sus diseños la planta del quinchamalí o Quinchamalium chilense, herbácea nativa que da nombre al pueblo y que forma parte de la medicina indígena. De esta manera, la instalación pone en diálogo el presente y el pasado del noble oficio, transmitido de generación en generación. En el video, que registra todo el proceso, las alfareras testimonian esta forma de vida y sustento familiar, cuya continuidad está en permanente peligro por amenazas medioambientales a su materia prima y a la precariedad en la que desarrollan su arte, dando cuenta de la necesidad de poner la atención en este lugar y resguardar su acervo cultural. Quinchamalium chilense is an installation work articulated in a dialogue between Chilean artist Josefina Guilisasti and loceras from the small town of Quinchamalí who represent this ancient black pottery tradition now proposed to be recognized in Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Josefina Guilisasti and anthropologist Belén Roca got immersed in the daily life of these women, entering Chile's Ñuble Region to become familiar with its history, its hopes and its ecosystem. They encouraged a group of women and men to join a drawing workshop and include as a reference of their designs the plant of the quinchamalí or 'Quinchamalium chilense', a native herb that gives its name to the town and is also part of indigenous medicine. They were also encouraged, while respecting thir traditions, to innovate within the possibilities provided by the work on clay. In addition to the works that resulted from that experience, there are also other pieces from the Museum of American Popular Art Tomás Lago's collection, all of which have an inestimable heritage value. Therefore, the installation engages in a dialogue between the present and the past of this noble craft, transmitted from generation to generation. In the video which records the entire process, the potters testify about their way of life and family sustenance, whose continuity is in permanent danger due to environmental threats on their raw Whereas this genre has traditionally been based on a fairly simple staging of items on a table, from my perspective I have incorporated a less obvious, twofold aspect, breaking down this traditional scene by focusing on the individual existence of certain components of this world that suggest processes, private and commercial histories, pilgrimages, territorial discoveries, stages of colonisation, exploitation and the development of capital. Thus, I depict objects such as jugs, dishes, cups, pans, plates, teapots, china birds and Persian carpets from different viewpoints, translating their material substance: aluminium (The Vigil), enamel (The Jug on the Table), chinaware (Still Life, Mourning and Souvenir)) and carpet fabrics (Paradisus).I depict these in my work using a continuous schematic working system, thus forming series that range from seventy-two paintings in the case of The Vigil to a hundred and eighty in Mourning. I use a mass production system to mechanise the production of each painting: over a period of a year or two, I paint a set number of items a week, and this process culminates in a final selection and installation of pieces in accordance with the particular characteristics of the exhibition space. And here it should be noted that the format of Still Life alters the way my work is presented: what in the exhibitions were series (with each piece forming part of a whole) are broken up in these pages and the objects depicted are presented individually to the reader, the idea being for each painting to be looked at anew in isolation from its series.︎︎︎︎︎︎︎ Download PDF El libro que presento en esta oportunidad se titula Still Life y reúne la obra desarrollada por más de una década, lapso en el que he procurado una relectura personal del género naturaleza muerta. Si en términos tradicionales dicho género se basa en una puesta en escena más bien simple de elementos sobre una mesa, desde mi perspectiva incorporo un aspecto menos evidente y doble al escindir esta escena clásica en función de un acercamiento a la existencia individual de ciertos componentes de ese mundo que sugieren procesos, historias privadas y comerciales, peregrinaciones, descubrimientos de territorios, etapas de colonización, explotación y desarrollo del capital. De tal manera, se representan pictóricamente, desde diversos puntos de vista, objetos tales como jarros, vasijas, tazas, ollas, platos, teteras, pájaros de porcelana y alfombras persas, traduciendo sus materialidades: aluminio (La vigilia), enlozado (El jarro sobre la mesa), porcelana (Bodegones, El duelo y Souvenir ) y tejidos de alfombras (Paradisus). En mi obra los reproduzco pictóricamente, utilizando un sistema de trabajo esquemático y continuo. Así, formo series que van desde setenta y dos pinturas, en el caso de La Vigilia, hasta ciento ochenta, en El Duelo. Mecanizo la realización de cada pintura en una producción masiva: en un periodo de uno a dos años, pinto una determinada cantidad de elementos semanalmente; el proceso culmina en una muestra final, cuyas piezas son seleccionadas e instaladas conforme a las características particulares del espacio para la exhibición. This show synthesizes the work they have been developing for a while. Both, albeit working separately have elaborated works that converge on the reflection about tradition in painting from a contemporary art standpoint. Not a minor question if we consider this tradition as one of the core issues of the representation theory, the notion of image and the figure of the artist. These are the concepts developed by Guilisasti and Oyarzún in their work. The path we will traverse through their “two gazes” starts with the analysis of their works in an autonomous manner, and, then, they entwine their proposals in a similar area; the previous, with the objective of making their encounters and confrontations that arise from the desire –shared– to construe a work that, from art, dialogues with itself.︎︎︎︎︎︎︎ Download PDF Construcción de dos miradas, exposición que sintetiza el trabajo que han venido desarrollando desde hace un tiempo. Historically, the academy has tended to regard the still life as a minor genre, because of this connection to domesticity; after all, still life subjects usually come from the kitchen. For this reason the genre was often relegated to secondary spaces, scarcely ever displayed in the great private salons. Verisimilitude, illusion and attachment to a model order and structure each of her canvases, and it is possible to identify, in the majority of her works, a link with the minor genres of painting - still life, landscape. The effect of reality and the represented subject matter, however, are instead artifices of technique. They are strategies that trap viewers in common situations and places that they believe they recognize and identify with painting, but that obscure and camouflage an anxiety and a movement toward other less specific artistic media. ︎︎︎︎︎︎︎ Download PDF Es difícil describir las pinturas de Josefina Guilisasti en términos pictóricos.
