Marfa — Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo is a settlement in the coastal desert of northern Chile. The beach is illegally occupied in summer by thousands of people who put up makeshift structures and turn it into an impromptu –and environmentally degraded– seaside resort.

Further north on the American continent, in Marfa, Texas, Donald Judd, an American artist associated with minimalism, intervenes in the desert landscape by installing modules of reinforced concrete built on a human scale.

Marfa/Puerto Viejo comprises eight large-format canvases (2.40 x 0.95 m.) reproducing images of the occupation in Puerto Viejo and the work of Donald Judd. Two quite different situations are connected by the openness of their desert landscape settings built over with cube-shaped modules of different materials (concrete in Marfa, wooden walls and tin roofs in Puerto Viejo), which are registered from the same viewpoint and painted on a
perpendicular axis.
